Can rolling composite wildflower blocks increase biodiversity in agricultural landscapes better than wildflowers strips?

چکیده

Abstract Biodiversity and abundance of wildlife has dramatically declined in agricultural landscapes. Sown, short‐lived wildflower (WF) strips along the margins crop fields are a widespread often subsidised agri‐environmental schemes, intended to enhance biodiversity, provide refuges for wild plant arthropod populations ecosystem services crops. Meanwhile, WF elements also criticised, since their functionality decreases with succession, removal aged strip poses an ecological trap attracted only common mobile species benefit. Further, insects impacted by pesticides from due shared boundaries edge effects. The performance measure could be improved combining several different successional stages, each harbouring unique community plants arthropods, into persistent, composite block, where stages exist parallel. Monitoring data on many taxa literature shows, that third temporarily present ageing stip, thus offering blocks should increase cumulative richness 28%–39% compared annual strips. Persistence would offer reliable refuge animal populations, supporting predators herbivores. have less crops same area, effects pesticides. Policy implications . Here I suggest change conservation practice changing blocks. By regular replacement either within block (rotational) or at its (rolling), habitat heterogeneity perpetuated. Rolling locations over years, original location can reconverted arable land while nearby is still available wildlife. A schemes necessary, some European countries clustered explicitly not subsidised.

Experimental evidence that wildflower strips increase pollinator visits to crops

Wild bees provide a free and potentially diverse ecosystem service to farmers growing pollination-dependent crops. While many crops benefit from insect pollination, soft fruit crops, including strawberries are highly dependent on this ecosystem service to produce viable fruit. However, as a result of intensive farming practices and declining pollinator populations, farmers are increasingly turn...

Biodiversity in agricultural landscapes: saving natural capital without losing interest.

While species extinctions continue to be a matter of extreme concern, changes in biodiversity in the world’s agricultural landscapes have largely escaped attention. Implicitly, the world community has traded off biodiversity in these landscapes against the conservation of threatened endemics in protected areas. But biodiversity loss in agricultural landscapes also has an opportunity cost. It af...

Measuring biodiversity and sustainable management in forests and agricultural landscapes.

Most of the world's biodiversity will continue to exist outside protected areas and there are also managed lands within many protected areas. In the assessment of millennium targets, there is therefore a need for indicators to measure biodiversity and suitability of habitats for biodiversity both across the whole landscape/seascape and in specific managed habitats. The two predominant land uses...
